In a move that appears to be another step away from its Flash platform, Adobe has submitted the code for its Flash-based Flex framework to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) to be managed as an independent project.
WhilethecompanypledgeditscontinuedsupportforFlex--alongwithitsunderlyingFlashtechnology--AdobealsosuggestedthatWebapplicationdevelopersinthefuturewouldbeusingHTML5ratherthanFlash.
"Inthelong-term,webelieveHTML5willbethebesttechnologyforenterpriseapplicationdevelopment,"theblogpoststated."Wealsoknowthat,currently,Flexhasclearbenefitsforlarge-scaleclientprojectstypicallyassociatedwithdesktopapplicationprofiles."
FlexisanSDK(SoftwareDevelopmentKit)thatincludesacompilerandanumberoflibrariesthatcanbeusedtobuildcross-platformRichInternetApplications(RIA)thatrunonAdobeFlash.In2008,thecompanyplacedtheSDKunderanopen-sourcelicense.
TheASFwillnowvoteonwhethertotakeonAdobeFlex.Theopen-sourcesoftwarebodyhasnotcommentedonifitwillagreetomanagethetechnology'sdevelopment.Ifitdoes,however,itmaynotbelongbeforeFlexbecomesanApacheproject.In2010,whenGooglesubmittedWaveasapotentialproject,ASFapprovedthetechnologywithinamonth
ShouldtheASFagreetotakethetechnology,theroadmapwillbemanagedbyanindependentgoverningbodyoperatingunderApache'sbylaws.Adobewillcontinuetodedicatefull-timeengineerstofurtherdebuganddeveloptheSDK,thecompanypledged.
AlongwithFlex,AdobehasalsosubmittedanumberofotherrelatedcomponentstoASF,mostnotablyBlazeDS,amessagingsystemfortransferringdatabetweenaFlexapplicationandaback-endJavaEE(JavaEnterpriseEdition)server.ItalsosubmittedanexperimentalFlashcompiler,calledFalcon,andassortedtestingtools.
Earlierthismonth,AdobeannouncedthatitwouldnolongerbedevelopingFlashfornewmobiledevices,andinsteadfocusontoolingforHTML5.Thestill-developingHTML5standardwillprovidemanyofthesamemultimediacapabilitiesthatFlashnowoffers,andwon'trequireaseparateplug-in.
ObservershavespeculatedthatAdobe'sretreatfromthemobileFlashplatformrepresentsthefirststepindeemphasizingFlashinfavorofHTML5.JackGold,ofanalystfirmJ.GoldAssociatesLLC.,notedthatAdobefacedadauntingtaskinmaintainingFlashacrossanever-increasingnumberofdifferentplatforms,asmorenon-Windowsdevicesenterthemarketplace.HTML5,incontrast,canworkacrossallmobilebrowsersthatsupportthestandard,andwillrequirenospecificadjustmentsforeachunderlyinghardwareplatform.
